I was talking to a friend recently, who commented that many of today’s children aren’t goal-oriented, and have little experience with planning their life.

There are many facets of a child’s life that, if used appropriately, can be used as stepping-stones to prepare them for the larger decisions in their life later on. In January, I will start a series of tips called "Laying a Good Foundation." The emphasis of this series will be teaching kids to be responsible for their actions (or lack thereof). In the meantime, talk to your kids about what’s important to them. What would they like to accomplish this year? Be prepared for the silly as well as the obvious. Challenge them to make one resolution that will better their life in the long run, but may require some additional effort on their part. Try to get past keeping their room clean all year; opt instead for trying to be a better friend, student, brother or sister. Don’t look for a job to add to their already busy lives, but a better way to live their life. If all else fails, think of this as a way for you to learn more about your child’s priorities and a road to better communication.
